led-filament

We sent one of our popular Bright Goods LED filament light bulb, The George, a maxi globe, off to electronics enthusiast, Sami Mughal, for review and below is what he thought of our lamp!

Bright Goods - the LED lamps to brighten up your home
While we probably just ignore the fact, but the last two decades have redefined how we light up our homes. The world was lit up by filament based lamps, that would be somewhere between 15W to a 100W, and you could easily tell how bright something was based on the pure power of the lamp you bought. By our standards today, that sounds a bit scary, especially since even photographers don't use such high wattage lamps. However, the basic filament lamp runs on a very simple principle. A high current is passed through it, and as a result, it glows purely on the basis of how hot it is. Different materials and gases combined with different filaments gave us different colours, and thus the lighting industry was formed.
Then came the energy saver lamp. They looked a bit different, took a while to gain brightness and did not work with our dimmers. However, they saved energy. They would only take something between 6W to 15W, and still give us the light we wanted. Various laws and initiatives to save the environment saw many households and commercial users shift to those. As time has gone on, they have become better looking, give you even better performance in terms of light and life, and even let you dim them.
However, the latest shift towards all things vintage has made us highly nostalgic about those lamps of old. Their hot fuzzy light had a particular warmth that gave us sharp shadows and deep evenings. It just worked, even if it is all about the fact that we grew up with them. This is where Bright Goods comes in. Not only are they offering you LED lamps that look and feel absolutely vintage, as if by magic, they have packed in the energy saver bit too.
The George LED Filament Maxi Globe, B22 Very Warm (2.2K)
In fact, it gives you all the features you want from an energy saver lamp:
- Low energy (our test sample only consumed 6W)
- Looks and feels vintage as the lamps of old , with a clearly visible filament, both off and on
- Dimmable
- Comes in various colour temperatures
- Most importantly, there is no big white 'box' under the lamp which contains the electronics. All this has been neatly packed away, and there is nothing to give away the fact that this is not just an ordinary old filament lamp
Since we were very impressed by what it said on paper, we asked them to send us a sample. It as going to sit above our dining table, which let me tell you, is a high priority spot.
As expected, Bright Goods offer a huge range of different designs. We went with the George, which offers a beautiful lattice/criss-cross LED pattern, which is evident from the picture above.
It offers the following specifications:
- BULB TYPE: Maxi Globe Lattice LED Filament
- WATTAGE: 6W
- BASE/CAP: Edison Screw E27 and Bayonet B22
- SIZE: (G125) Ø 125mm x175mm
- GLASS: Clear by default, available in Sepia Tint if requested
- LUMENS: 600
- DIMMABLE: Yes
- WHITE TEMP:
- Warm: 2,700K CRI: 80
- V. Warm: 2,200K CRI: 90
It arrived well packed, and it looked the part. Mind you, since these are designed for commercial applications, it is a bit bigger than your usual lamp, though as it is both functional and a bit of decoration, I did not mind. Since they come in standard fittings, there is no real installation involved apart from taking your old lamp out and your new lamp in.
As the lamp turns on, you can see the criss-cross lattice of the LEDs lighting up, just like an old fashioned filament lamp. In fact, to quote kids these days, the light, the colour and the looks are all 'on point'. There is absolutely no delay in achieving maximum brightness, and the turn on time is absolutely instant.
Camera issues aside, as is obvious, the lamp looks and feels the part (apart from not getting hot like a regular lamp), and definitely has the 'looks' one wants. In fact, the only problem you may have is the fact that you may want to keep looking at it, and that is definitely not good for your eyes. Being a show piece also means that you don't really need to worry about a lamp shade. They look good on their own.
Personally I am very happy with this lamp there, and I hope it stays there. Energy Saver and LED based lamps tend to last a very long time, and while I have no lifetime data on this, I wouldn't be surprised if this lasts a long time. However, all Bright Goods products are sold with a 2 year guarantee against failure.
The Bright Goods series have been so popular based on their good looks and usability that they are being used all over restaurants and shops in the UK. In fact, an easy place to spot them is your local Nandos!
Price wise, they are a bit more expensive, but you're not just buying a lamp, you're buying a show piece as well. For example, The George, which is what we tried, costs £23.95 from them.
More information on Bright Goods products, their whole range, as well as a portfolio which shows off their usage, and of course the ability to buy them is all available on their website.
More on The George can be found on this page.
Thank you to Sami of Ox Gadgets for the lovely write up on George. To keep up-to-date with technology and lifestyle, take a look at his blog here.
LED Bulbs: UncoveredPosted on 19 Jul 00:00 Read more
In this blog post we will be uncovering LED light bulbs - their advantages and the reasons why you should invest in LED. If you are debating whether to take the bold move to swap out your energy-wasting halogen bulbs for energy-efficient LED bulbs, then our 411 on LED lighting will guide you to making your decision:
The early beginnings of LED
LED stands for light emitting diode and the first practical visible LED was created in 1962 by scientist Nick Holonyak Junior. Funnily enough, Holonyak was not trying to find a solution to incandescent lights, but instead he was trying to create a laser light. Astounded by his newly found creation of a red coloured LED, Holonyak, decided to turn it into a lamp. Within the same year, the first LED lamps were invented and available on the market for a staggering $260! A decade later, green and yellow LEDs were created by Holonyak's students.
LEDs started appearing in circuit boards in 1964, digital watches in 1970s and towards the end of the 1980s, they started to appear in traffic and brake lights.
They were limited by high prices and low light output, but as time passed, technology improved and nowadays, you can buy super bright LED light bulbs that replace 100W incandescent bulbs with the look and feel of a traditional bulb. Holonyak predicted that LED would replace those energy-hungry, incandescent light bulbs that originally propelled the world out of darkness. Holonyak did not think that it would take 50 years for LED lights to become commonplace in homes.
Nowadays, LEDs are being specified for all environments, not just homes, including offices, retail, warehouses, distribution, car parks, leisure and even the hospitality sector.
Advantages of LED lights
There are many advantages of using LED lights - both from an energy saving and environmentally-friendly view. Below we detail the advantages of using LED lights and how they compare to the bulbs they have superseded - the notorious energy-wasting incandescents.
Less energy = lower bills!
They are the most energy-efficient lights to be invented. Using up to 95% less energy than those notorious, energy-wasting incandescents - LED lights pay for themselves through energy savings (usually within a few months). Funding for your new LED lights may be initially high, but you will notice a difference in your energy bills. If you are a business and are looking for additional help towards funding your LED lighting upgrade, check out our BrightPlan leasing plan here.
Longer lifespans = less worry!
LED lights last longer than traditional lights as they use less energy (as explained above). Factors that also affect LED lifespan include; how you use it and the type of LED light you purchase - don't expect a £2 LED bulb's quality to be outstanding, it won't! However, if you invest in the LED itself and are willing to pay a little more, coupled with a decent guarantee against failure, your investment in LED will be worthwhile. All Bright Goods LED filament lamps come with a 2 Year Guarantee against failure - which means that if in the unlikely event the lamp fails, we will replace it for free - providing that it the lamp has been registered for the guarantee and it fails within the 2 Year Guarantee.
Instant On = no warm up!
With a flick of a switch, or from the detection of movement (sensor models), LEDs give out their light instantly when switched on. No more waiting around for a dimmed light to warm up. LED lights are instant and provide bright light to those dark spaces.
Low temperatures = no problem!
Tests carried out show that LED lights work great in environments where temperatures are low - such as in cold storage and refrigeration. Compact fluorescent lamps do not perform well in colder temperatures, whereas LEDs are perfect for these conditions - making them ideal for supermarkets.
No toxins = eco-friendly!
LED lights are free from toxic chemicals, making them not only environmentally-friendly, but better for your health, too. Fluorescent lights also contain mercury gas which is dangerous for the environment. The illumination provided by an LED gives off zero UV emissions, making LED lights suitable for humid environments.
Why should I invest in LED?
The reason why you should invest in LED lighting is because they are the most energy-efficient lights on the market, not only do they last longer compared to incandescents, they also provide bright instant illumination when switched on. Quality can vary so it is important that you choose LED lights from a reputable manufacturer - look out for guarantees and check tech specs so that you are comparing like-for-like.
So now that you are armed with all of the information on why you should invest in LED lighting, why don't you take a look at our LED light bulbs? Head over to Bright Goods to view our decorative range of filament LED lamps. If you are after industrial and commercial LED lamps and luminaires, see our sister brand, Goodlight here.

How to Light a Dining RoomPosted on 21 Jun 00:00 Read more
In today's blog post, we will be discussing the best tips to light a dining room. There are so many considerations to take on board when choosing light fixtures - whether its for a new room you are decorating or simply upgrading your existing lighting. The dining room is where meals are consumed at a table, whether by families, friends or sometimes even strangers. It is the focal point of entertainment dinner parties - whether every evening, or on special occasions such as Christmas. It brings people together, conversations are formed and dinners are enjoyed - which makes the lighting ambience even more significant in this focal dining room.
Lighting should definitely not be taken for granted in the dining room. Whilst your nearest and dearest are tucking into their dinner, it is important that the room is well-lit so that all your dinner guests enjoy the food and drink on offer. You also want your dinner companions to be alert when they are hearing all about your day.
Size is Important
First things first, size is important! You don't want a huge light fixture that takes up the whole of the dining room if its very small to start with. Huge light fittings will make the room seem smaller and can be an eye sore in such a small room. Keep it simple, if its a small room, opt for small to medium sized fixtures such as globes or round chandeliers. If you are lucky enough to have a decent sized dining room then go bold with a mid to large sized pendant to really fill the room.
The light fixture should finish hanging approximately 36" to the top of the table.
Shape Up
Secondly, think about the current shapes that exist in your dining room already. Do you have an oval or rectangle dining table? Matching your light fixtures to the dining table will really emphasise your room. If you have an oval table, go for light fixtures which are round in shape - such as this gorgeous chandelier from The Chandelier & Mirror Company at £249 (just make sure you have enough room for the 'drop'). Currently, the chandelier looks quite cool in colour, so to get that cosy warm colour temperature, team it up with our Elizabeth LED filament candle bulb which will really make your room sparkle and glow.
Linear light fixtures suit rectangle tables really well as their elongated shape mimics the table. John Lewis' Emilia Jazzy Diner Bar Ceiling Light is perfect for a rectangle or extension table and adds that soft warm glow to the dining room at £420. Plus, it is super stylish in appearance, making it a talked about piece at the dinner table. Thinking of going LED with this ceiling light? Contact us today and ask about our G9 LED filament light bulb, named 'Roy', who would really make this statement light come to life!
Now, we understand that not everyone's dining room can accommodate these spectacular pieces or afford the price tag, but there are plenty of cost-effective light fixtures available on the market, so do hunt around to get the best deal.
Dim Down, Done!
Stand out from your family and friends and be different - install a dimmer to your centre lighting piece (of course, make sure your lighting is dimmable for this to work first). Adding a dimmer allows you the functionality to control the mood of your dining experience - maybe you want the lights dimmed down for a special occasion or soft lighting for when the family are round. Whatever the occasion, you have complete control over your lighting and it is so, so simple, too.
If you are looking for dimmable lighting, why not take a look at our energy-efficient LED bulbs which are fully dimmable and last longer than traditional halogen bulbs.
Hopefully you have found our tips for lighting your dining room helpful. We would love to see photos of how you have been inspired by our blog post. Maybe you are already following these tips - even so, we would still like to hear from you - tweet to us by using hashtag #lightmytuesday
Summer BBQ Decor Comes to Light with our Top Garden InspirationsPosted on 14 Jun 00:00 Read more
Summer is the season for garden parties and BBQ's, but it's not all about the food! More and more people are now investing time in creating the perfect theme and decor for their BBQ's than ever before. No longer all about the burgers and hot dogs, the conversation is focused more on outdoor decorations and lighting trends. Here is my best decor for this summer's BBQ.
When it comes to lighting, the possibilities are endless! Lighting for a garden BBQ offers more space, creativity and flexibility than indoor lighting. Hanging lights around your garden is a great way way to flatter any design or shape of your outdoor space. You can use any shape bulbs (preferably energy saving LED) or any colours to enhance the theme of your BBQ. Hanging lights come in a variety of colours that really add beautifully to the decor or can be used on its own without any other decorations.
Lighting for your garden can also be confusing; do you go for neatly tucked away lights strategically placed within your plants? Or do you go for the over the top colourful lights that can be noticed from down the street? The more subtle the lighting does the same trick, although not as noticeable as the hanging lights, the ground lights are still very much as decorative as any other. However, if you simply want to create boarders around your seating area and shine the spotlight on decking and your lawn, then lanterns and candles are the best option. These lighting ideas are perfect as the BBQ turns from day to evening.
Enjoyng the BBQ late in the evening can get a little chilly, especially if you've been sitting in the garden most of the day. However, unless you're sitting right next to the BBQ and getting some of the warmth from there, why not create some space for a fire pit? It combines both light and heat and creates a warm and cosy feel to the outdoor decor. It works perfectly with the garden lights and creates a lovely glow that works for any garden layout.
